Featured TLD: .City

In 2012, ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and numbers, accepted applications to create new Top Level Domains (TLDs). A TLD is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, .Com is the most popular TLD today. 1,930 applications for proposed new TLDs were filed. This week's featured TLD is the .city TLD

October 7, 2014 - Prior to 2014, there were just 23 generic TLDs – like .Com and .Biz. So far this year alone, over 400 new generic TLDs have launched, including new TLDs like .xyz, .guru, and .club.

This week’s featured TLD is the .City TLD. Snow Sky, LLC (a Donuts company) applied with ICANN to create the City TLD in 2012. The Snow Sky, LLC application for the City TLD was quickly approved, and Snow Sky, LLC signed a contract with ICANN to operate the City TLD on May 29, 2014. .City was delegated on July 10, 2014. The .City TLD is currently in the Early Access phase and will go to General Availability on October 8, 2014 at 9:00 AM CST.

We reached out to Mason Cole, VP Communications & Industry Relations for Donuts, Inc. for some Q & A about the .City TLD.

How many Donuts TLDs are already in General Availability?
138 as of today.

City is currently in the ‘Early Access’ phase. Has Early Access activity been a good indicator to Donuts of a particular TLD’s sales potential at General Availability?
It’s not necessarily an indicator one way or another. Early Access has been popular with registrants interested in particularly useful domain names, and some of those names have been snapped up very quickly in the EA program. At other times, EA is fairly quiet but the associated gTLD still sees a lot of activity during the regular GA period. Overall, our gTLDs are performing very well.

How do you anticipate that .City domains will be used?
.CITY is obviously of interest to localities around the world that are looking for a strong and specific online identity. But its appeal is wider than that — and the gTLD is open to any registrant who wishes to use it. There are thousands of potential registrants with affinities to their locales who may want an online presence associated with their town, city or region.

City domains are expected to go to General Availability tomorrow at 9:00 AM CST.
