9 Translations of .COM Pass Initial Evaluation Phase

A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the text to the right of the final domain name. For example, .COM is the most popular TLD today. In 2014, the .COM TLD may be available in Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Thai, other popular scripts.

A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, .com is the most popular Top Level Domain (TLD) today.

Today, the .COM TLD is only available in English. However, in 2012, Verisign, Inc., the owner and operator of the .COM Top Level Domain (TLD) applied to create nine additional .COM Top Level Domains in native-language scripts including Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Thai, Russian, Chinese Simplified, Hebrew, Korean, and Japanese. All 9 of these applications have recently passed the Initial Evaluation phase. (Two of these 9 applications, one in Chinese Hant and one in Chinese Hans script, were deemed too similar, and therefore one of these two will have to be dropped). This means that as early as 2014, these new translations of the .COM Top Level Domain may become available to the public.

The Internet is currently undergoing an unprecedented expansion, as ICANN, the organization that oversees the Internet Domain Name System, is considering applications for over 1900 new Top Level Domains. In today's world, there are just 22 generic Top Level Domains, such as .COM, .NET, and .ORG, in addition t several hundred geographic Top Level Domains such as .US and .DE, and recently, China (in Chinese). However, in 2012, ICANN accepted over 1900 applications for new Top Level Domains, including .WEB .SITE, and .COM in 9 different scripts.

Each applicant must undergo a lengthy review process. Applications are being reviewed at a rate of 30 per week in the order established by lottery in December 2012. To date,93 applications have passed Initial Evaluation.

After the Initial Evaluation phase, applicants must pass a technical readiness test, sign a contract with ICANN, and then ramp up for the Sunrise phase, which is a 'pre-sales' phase that allows trademark owners and others to claim domain names ahead of general availability to the public.

In 2014, we can expect these new, native-language .COM Top Level Domains (TLDs) to become available to the public.
