October 28, 2013 - A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, .Com is the most popular TLD today. will be featuring one new TLD per week in our 10-week series on some of the most popular new TLDs. This week’s featured TLD: The .Kiwi TLD.

The .Kiwi TLD

Dot Kiwi Limited was the sole applicant for the .kiwi TLD. The 'Kiwi' is the name of a flightless bird native to New Zealand.

DotAnything: Can you tell us a little about your history with .kiwi? Why did you decide to apply for the .kiwi TLD?

Dot Kiwi Limited: "I came up with the .kiwi concept back in early 2011. Along with a small team of expat New Zealanders we developed the idea into the Dot Kiwi company that you see today. The original idea was a result of us wanting to raise funds for my hometown (Christchurch) which had been devastated by earthquakes. That was some time ago now, but the cause remains very personal and precious to our team. Why .kiwi? Well it was the only TLD that makes sense for the New Zealand market, and it's the New Zealand market that interests us the most."

DotAnything: Dot Kiwi will be one of the first geographic TLDs to launch. Do you have any special events planned that you would like to share with us?

Dot Kiwi Limited: "We'll have lots of events and offers running over the next 6 months. Our first special promotion will be our Pioneer Programme ( starting in November 2013. The best thing to do is to sign up to our website for notifications, or ask your registrar regularly!"

DotAnything: Have you selected a planned start date for General Availability?

Dot Kiwi Limited: "General Availability is directly linked to the earlier launch phases such as Sunrise and Landrush. So Sunrise is estimated to begin on December 15th, 2013, and it will run for 60 days. Landrush will follow Sunrise almost immediately, and will last for 30 days. So if you add it all up, General Availability is scheduled for early April 2014."

DotAnything: Can you tell us which Registrars have signed up to distribute .kiwi domain names?

Dot Kiwi Limited: "I'm afraid I can't be specific at this time, but being one of the first new gTLDs to launch, we are getting a lot of attention locally and globally and are working closely with many registrars."

DotAnything: How do you expect .kiwi domain names to be used in the future? Will you be primarily targeting the New Zealand market or will you be expanding your Marketing efforts outside of New Zealand?

Dot Kiwi Limited: "Anywhere that benefits from a fun, casual and social flavour to an online presence will find strong appeal with .kiwi. The existing, more traditional gTLDs and ccTLDs, perhaps have a stronger appeal to a corporate or conservative web property. So that being said, while we will do a lot of direct consumer marketing within New Zealand, the TLD does have global appeal. Our marketing efforts outside New Zealand will be very focussed on the registrar channel and supporting their efforts in promoting our TLD."
