In 2012, ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and numbers, accepted applications to create new Top Level Domains (TLDs). A TLD is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, .Com is the most popular TLD today. 1,930 applications for proposed new TLDs were filed. This week's featured TLD is the .Shoes TLD.  Domains in the .Shoes TLD are expected to go on sale to the public on March 5, 2014.

February 25, 2014 - A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name.  For example, the .com TLD is the most popular TLD today.  Prior to 2014, there were just 23 generic TLDs - like .Com and .Biz.  This year, hundreds of new TLDs are expected to begin selling domains to the general public.  So far this year alone, 24 new generic TLDs have launched, including new TLDs like .Guru, .Ventures and .Holdings.

This week's featured TLD is the .Shoes TLD.  Binky Galley, LLC (a Donuts company) applied with ICANN to create the .Shoes TLD in 2012. The Binky Galley, LLC application for the .Shoes TLD was quickly approved, and Binky Galley, LLC signed a contract with ICANN to operate the .Shoes TLD on October 2, 2014.

"The .SHOES gTLD is appealing to a very lucrative and worldwide footwear market. Everything from athletic, fashion, functional, and specialty shoes will find a place in this specific and relevant gTLD. Everyone that needs footwear, and that is every human being worldwide, can now more easily find the consumer information that meets their specific needs." - Mason Cole, VP Communications & Industry Relations for Donuts, Inc.
