2 New TLDs Launch This Week
10/13/2014 - 2 new Top Level Domains (TLDs) are scheduled to begin selling domain names to the general public this week: .Soy and .Okinawa.
A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, the .com TLD is the most popular TLD today. Prior to 2014, there were just 23 generic TLDs - such as .com and .net. This year, hundreds of new TLDs are expected to begin selling domains to the general public. So far this year alone, over 400 new generic TLDs have launched, including new TLDs like .Buzz, .Link and .XYZ.
The .Soy and .Okinawa TLDs are the latest in a series of new TLD launches which started in February and are expected to continue into 2015. The new TLDs launching this year and next are a result of the 2012 application round for new TLDs. In 2012, ICANN held its first open application process, inviting organizations to apply for an any Top Level Domain of their choice. Over 1,900 organizations applied to create new Top Level domains.
