This unprecedented expanstion of the TLD marketplace is a result of an application round held in 2012. In 2012, ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - held an application round inviting companies from around the world to apply to create new Top Level Domains. 1,930 applications for new TLDs were applied. Of these, 1,814 applications remain in the active status, while 116 applications have been withdrawn.
The process to launch a new TLD is a lengthy one. Each prospective registry operator must sign a contract with ICANN and undergo pre-delegation testing before it can be added to the Internet. After a new TLD is added to the Internet, it must undergo a specific series of steps before it can sell domains to the general public. (TLDs that are operated as branded or closed registries can forego the following steps). TLD operators that plan to sell domains to the general public must undergo a Sunrise phase before they can sell domains to the general public. The Sunrise period is a time during which domains are sold, first, to Trademark holders, and second to individuals or organizations interested in paying a higher price to obtain the domain before it is sold to the general public. After the Sunrise period is complete, the TLD operator is free to sell domains to the general public. Certain TLDs also use the first seven days of General Availability to sell domains at a higher price - dubbed the 'Early Access' price.
The best domains in new TLDs go fast. The best way to increase your chances of getting the domain name that you want in a particular new TLD is to pre-register. When domains in each new TLD go on sale, DotAnything.co will submit a purchase request on behalf of our customers who have confirmed their pre-registrations by providing payment after the price and launch date for each TLD is announced. Customers will be notified if their pre-registration has resulted in an actual registration. Customers will receive a full refund for any confirmed pre-registrations that do not result in an actual registration.
