92 Applicants Pass Initial Evaluation

In 2012, ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and numbers, accepted applications to create new Top Level Domains (TLDs). A TLD is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, the most popular TLD today is the .COM TLD, which is owned an operated by Verisign, Inc.  Over 1900 applications for new TLDs were filed for everything from .WEB to .SHELL.  ICANN has been evaluating these applications at a rate of approximately 100 applications per week.

August 16, 2013 - On August 16th, ICANN announced that 92 additional TLD applications have passed the Initial Evaluation phase. Just 236 of the original 1930 applications are still awaiting Initial Evaluation. The total number of applicants to pass Initial Evaluation to date is 1,574. ICANN is targeting completing the Initial Evaluation phase for all applicants by the end of August 2013.

ICANN has been reviewing TLDs in the order which was established by a lottery held by ICANN on December 17, 2012. ICANN is targeting completing Initial Evaluation for all applicants by August 2013.
