There were two applications filed with ICANN from companies wishing to create the .DIRECT Top Level Domain. One applicant, Half Trail, LLC (owned by Donuts Inc.), plans to sell domain names within the .DIRECT Top Level Domain to the public. The other applicant, DISH DBS Corporation (Parent Company Dish Network Corporation) does not intend to sell domain names within the .DIRECT Top Level Domain to the general public. According to the application filed with ICANN by the DISH DBS Corporation, “one of the goals of the proposed .direct gTLD is to position Applicant and its affiliated companies to meet future client expectations and competitive market demands to ensure it can continue to grow its reputation in the broadcasting, cable television, internet, phone, video sales and rentals, video on demand and wireless industries, as well as in the global marketplace.”
It is interesting to note that according to Hoovers.com, one of the top three competitors for DISH Network is DIRECTV. A quick search on USPTO.gov reveals that while DIRECTV does not own a trademark in the United States for the word “Direct”, it does own a trademark for the term “DIRECTV”. Therefore, DIRECTV, LLC could make the argument that a .DIRECT Top Level Domain is confusingly similar to the DIRECTV Trademark, effectively blocking the creation of a .DIRECT Top Level Domain by either Half Trail, LLC or DISH DBS. Stay tuned.
Get New TLDs Inc. will accept pre-registration requests for domains within the .DIRECT Top Level Domain at this time, since at least one applicant being considered to run the .DIRECT Top LEvel Domain does plan on selling .DIRECT domain names to the public.
How Does It Work?
- Pre-Register Your Domain Name.
- When each Top Level Domain announces their pricing structure, we'll email you with that information.
- Corfirm your order and provide payment information.
- DotAnything.co Inc. will put in a purchase request on your behalf as soon as domain name sales start.
- You may transfer your domain name to your preferred registrar.
is a Pre-registration?
When you pre-register for a domain name, it’s like adding it to a shopping list. DotAnything.co Inc. will keep your shopping list for you until pricing for each top level domain is announced to the public. At that time, DotAnything.co Inc. will email you and ask you to confirm your pre-registration request and provide payment in advance for every domain that you have pre-registered. DotAnything.co Inc. will put in a purchase request on your behalf as soon as domain name sales begin. DotAnything.co Inc. will refund the purchase price of any domains that do not result in an actual Registration.
- How much will my domain
Per domain pricing for each top level domain has not yet been announced. Get New TLDs will email you with per domain pricing for each of the domains that you have pre-registered prior to the General Availability date.
- Can I cancel my pre-registration?
Pre-registration requests are not final until after your pre-registration is confirmed and you have provided payment information.
- When will I get my domain
No one can guarantee that you will get every domain name that you pre-register for. No one even knows for sure which top level domains will be approved by ICANN, and which will not be. It is estimated that future new top level domain operators from this application round may begin selling domain names as early as 2014. Get New TLDs Inc. will email pre-registration customers with the expected “go live" date for each TLD that they have pre-registered for when this information becomes available.
- What types of domains can I pre-register?
You may pre-register generic names, such as names that are not trademarked. You may not pre-register for Geographic Names, Trademarked names, or names that are on the Names Collission list. Learn more about our Pre-Registration Guidelines.
